Mesh vs Rubber Drum Pads: Which Feels Better to Play?
One of the biggest factors in how an electronic kit feels is the pad type. The two main options — rubber and mesh — play very differently. Here’s how to choose.
Rubber pads
The original electronic pad material. Rubber pads are solid, durable, and usually cheaper, which is why they appear on many entry-level kits.

Mesh heads
Mesh heads use a woven fabric stretched over a frame, much like a real drumhead. They’ve become the standard on mid-range and pro kits for good reason.

- Much quieter to strike
- Tunable tension to match your feel
- Slightly higher cost
Which should you pick?
- Tight budget or kids’ first kit? Rubber pads do the job.
- Practicing for hours or transitioning from acoustic? Mesh heads feel far more realistic and are easier on your wrists.
- Noise-sensitive home? Mesh is noticeably quieter.
Bottom line: If you can stretch your budget, mesh heads are worth it — they feel closer to acoustic drums, play quieter, and let you tune the tension to your taste.
